Book Progress Update

Hello everyone,

I'm writing this to inform you of my progress on the JHipster Mini-Book. When I first decided to write this book, I thought I'd be finished by now. In fact, my goal was to finish it by today.

Back in early May, I was making good progress. I completed one of the four sections (on UI Components), was able to get it tech reviewed and fixed all the issues found. Below are the four sections of the book.

  1. Building an App with JHipster
  2. JHipster's UI Components
  3. JHipster's API Building Blocks
  4. JHipster in Production

My lack of progress is because I haven't prioritized writing the book over other activities in my life. I had a fun trip to Moab in early May and my available time to write spiraled downhill from there. To further drain my free time, we put our house on the market last week, and my wife and I had to do a lot to make that happen.

I have started writing the sample application for the first section. I expect this section to take the longest to write because I have to 1) develop the application 2) polish it and 3) document what I did. As you likely know, developing is the fun part. Documenting how I did it is the time consuming part. I expect the API and Production sections will go quickly. I know what I want to write, I just need to do it.

Next week, I'm on vacation in Montana for a week. When I get back, I have to prepare presentations for ÜberConf. Unfortunately, the talks I'm presenting don't have anything to do with JHipster, so it's unlikely I'll have a lot of time to work on the book until late July. That said, I am motivated to finish it and will likely sacrifice some sleep to make progress.

My new goal is to finish the JHipster Mini-Book in August and get it published in September. Hopefully that's good timing because summer will be over and folks will be back at work, ready to learn.
